I spoke with my friend Dr. Mitchell B. Reiss, the President of Washington College, about the humanities and arts as an essential part of a college curriculum. Traditionally, the liberal arts and humanities have been considered stepping stones; a student with a major in a humanities discipline is expected to continue school to pursue a master’s or doctorate degree. Without the humanities, democracy could not flourish. The humanities develop informed and critical citizens. Course Description • This course covers the study of Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Cinema, and Literature. • It will expose students to Classical and contemporary artists, their works, and the environment in which they lived, which inspired them to create. •The term Humanities comes from the Latin word, “humanitas” •It generally refers to art, literature, music, architecture, dance and the theatre—in which human subjectivity is emphasized and individual expressiveness is dramatized. A number of my summer conversations have centered around the importance of the arts and the humanities. The field of study teaches students how history, art, music, religion and culture have shaped the modern world. Humanities students build skills in writing and critical reading. Communication, writing, problem-solving, cultural awareness and critical thinking are all skills that are important to this program. Low level courses in the arts which can be used to meet graduation requirements will typically cover the basics and founding principles without getting too in-depth. Students who choose to major in humanities … While on one hand, Humanities centres on art, music and literature, on the other hand, Social Sciences focuses on anthropology, archaeology and politics. The Humanities & Fine Arts courses seek to help students understand, analyze, and explore the human condition. The visual and performing arts are often included in the humanities; in some cases, they're given a separate designation, as in the term, 'arts and humanities'.
